A fan gives up on LOST

Hmmm…I’m torn between considering this article by Andy Dehnart as laudable, for going against the grain and voicing criticisms that other reporters seldom acknowledge, or laughable, for posting such a lambastic commentary on the DAY the new season premieres, thus guaranteeing the most attention to his piece and a stirring up of the fandom which will probably keep his article in the headlines for the next couple of days at least.

On The Fuselage, a site sponsored by JJ and labeled as the “Official Site for the Creative Team Behind LOST,” any regular member of the board and especially any of the “UMods” (of which, I am one) would meet a post of this flavor on the board with a reminder to add a *dramatic flounce* before he “leaves.” Anyone who makes a comment like this:

Giving up the series now is the only way to prevent the inevitable disappointment that awaits in the future. Besides, I can no longer bear to watch one of television’s best casts and most intriguing concepts be destroyed by this half-baked mystery machine stupidity.

…is pretty much ASKING for attention. It is the use of the words “half-baked” and “stupidity” that just screams TROLL. A “troll” is an internet term for someone who comes to a message board to specifically stir up all of the die hard fans and get them all in a tizzy, and then sits back to watch the carnage. On The Fuselage, we call them “boars” because it is more specific to the island. This article is very boarish in parts. But, like I mentioned, there are some criticisms that he makes that are legitimate ones, for the most part.

I’m not criticizing him for deciding to “leave” the show. Even Damon has said that the show is not for everyone. What I’m critical of is his attempt to discredit the show and the loyal viewers who DO continue to enjoy this kind of show, all on the eve of the Season 3 premiere, no less. According to him:

This will not end well. “Lost” will undoubtedly turn into an “X-Files” mess, perhaps losing original cast members and replacing them with brand-new, previously unseen survivors (the Cargoholdies?). It may also hemorrhage viewers until one day as it falls further and further into the hole it’s digging for itself, until someone finally cancels the show.

The real problem is that giving up a series like “Lost” is not easy. There’s always one baby step forward that is enough to keep viewers hooked until the introduction of the next deus ex machina.

We’ll see about that. If y’all are up to discussing this further, I’m going to open up a thread in the EPM Forums. I’d love to hear your own criticisms or agreements with regards to this piece.

Ug, some people have no patience.

That’s the thing. This show requires patience and I can understand if this person is losing his for this show, which obviously they are (or were) a fan of. It may be true to some people that Lost hit it out of the park too early too fast, but most of us are remaining true to the show. We have total faith and confidence that the writers and producers will create at least two good more seasons out of this show. We can only hope.
